What Is ELDT?

ELDT stands for Entry-Level Driver Training. The federal rules establish baseline training requirements for certain drivers seeking a CDL, a CDL upgrade, or specified endorsements.

What does ELDT stand for?

Entry-Level Driver Training is the federal training framework in 49 CFR Part 380 for drivers entering certain commercial licensing paths. The requirements took effect on February 7, 2022.

Who needs ELDT?

  • First-time Class A CDL applicants.
  • First-time Class B CDL applicants.
  • Class B CDL holders upgrading to Class A.
  • First-time Hazardous Materials (H), Passenger (P), or School Bus (S) endorsement applicants.

What does ELDT include?

The applicable curriculum may include theory instruction, behind-the-wheel instruction, or both. The correct curriculum depends on the CDL class or endorsement.

Can the theory portion be completed online?

Yes. Theory instruction may be provided online by an eligible training provider. Online theory does not substitute for required behind-the-wheel instruction.

What is the Training Provider Registry?

The FMCSA Training Provider Registry lists providers that have self-certified that they meet federal requirements and retains completion records submitted by providers. FMCSA specifically states that providers should not describe themselves as “FMCSA approved” or “FMCSA certified.”

What happens after completion?

After required training is completed and reported, the applicant continues with the applicable State testing and remaining licensing steps.
