What is online ELDT?
ELDT establishes minimum federal training standards for certain first-time CDL and endorsement applicants. Theory instruction covers required knowledge topics and can be delivered online by an eligible provider.
Who can take ELDT theory online?
Online theory courses can serve applicants pursuing a first Class A or Class B CDL, a Class B-to-A upgrade, or a first-time Hazmat, Passenger or School Bus endorsement when ELDT applies. Your exact requirements depend on your credential history and any applicable exception.
What online theory does not replace
Class A, Class B, Passenger and School Bus paths generally include applicable behind-the-wheel training in addition to theory. Hazmat ELDT is theory-only under the federal ELDT curriculum, but other endorsement requirements still apply.
How completion reporting works
After successful completion, the eligible training provider submits required certification information to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. State licensing agencies verify the record before administering the applicable skills or knowledge test.
