1. Determine whether ELDT applies
Review your current CDL or CLP, credential history and the license class or endorsement you are pursuing. Use official FMCSA applicability guidance and confirm State-specific details.
2. Choose the correct curriculum
Select Class A, Class B, Class B-to-A upgrade, Hazmat, Passenger or School Bus training based on your actual goal.
3. Select eligible providers
Required training must come from providers listed in the Training Provider Registry for the applicable training type. Theory and behind-the-wheel training may be completed through different eligible providers.
4. Complete theory training
Work through each required theory unit and meet the applicable assessment standard. Online delivery is available for theory instruction.
5. Complete practical training when required
Class A, Class B, Passenger and School Bus applicants subject to ELDT must complete applicable behind-the-wheel training. Hazmat ELDT does not include a federal behind-the-wheel component.
6. Confirm completion reporting
Eligible providers submit completion certification information to the Training Provider Registry. Verify that the record is available before the applicable test.
7. Complete State and credential requirements
Take the required knowledge or skills tests and satisfy any remaining medical, identity, security, permit or State requirements.
