What is ELDT?
Entry-Level Driver Training is the federal training framework for certain first-time Class A and Class B CDL applicants, Class B-to-A upgrades, and first-time H, P and S endorsement applicants.
Can ELDT theory be completed online?
Yes. An eligible provider may deliver ELDT theory online. Online theory does not replace applicable behind-the-wheel training.
Who must complete behind-the-wheel training?
Applicants subject to Class A, Class B, Passenger or School Bus ELDT must complete applicable behind-the-wheel training. The federal Hazmat ELDT curriculum is theory-only.
Does FMCSA approve training providers?
FMCSA states that providers listed on the Training Provider Registry have self-certified compliance and should not describe themselves as FMCSA approved or certified.
How is completion reported?
The eligible training provider submits required completion certification information to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry for State verification.
How long does ELDT take?
Completion time varies by curriculum, delivery format and learner progress. Federal ELDT requirements emphasize completion and proficiency rather than one universal number of hours.
Is ELDT the same as getting a CDL?
No. ELDT is one part of the process. Permit, medical, identity, security, behind-the-wheel and State testing requirements may also apply.
